Representation of ethnicity

South Asian

Dinesh from Silicon valley.
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
I believe he is slightly stereotype as the actor lays on an Pakistani accent to go with the character. He is also stereo typed because he is seen as funny.

How and why in this case?
His Pakistani accent is used to say things in an off way and cause the audience to laugh. He also follows the stereotype of exotic as the other characters are white americans and they make remarks on his upbringing in Pakistan and how it is different to theirs or odd.

Sayid Jarrah from Lost
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
He is stereotyped as he is seen as dangerous because he was in the Gulf war as an Iraqi soldier so this also makes him exotic to the other characters.

How and why in this case?
He is seen as dangerous because the characters are mainly American and he was on opposing sides to the Americans in the Gulf war so he is instantly distrusted. He is seen as exotic because he is from a different country and has an accent so this makes him different.

Anwar Kharral from skins
Are the representations stereotypical?
Not really as he is presented as a normal character but he is sometimes seen as exotic.

How and why in this case?
He is seen as exotic because of his religion and upbringing in Pakistan which is very different to the rest of the cast.

East Asian

Jin and Sun Kwon from Lost

Are the representations stereotypical or not?
Yes they are stereotypical, this is because they follow the stereotypes of being exotic, dangerous and pitied.

How and why in this case?
They are exotic because they are from Korea which is  completely different to the rest of the characters who mainly come from America so they immediately stand out as being exotic or different to the rest of the characters. They are also deemed to be dangerous mainly Jin because of his constant show of manliness with his former job being an enforcer for a gangster but the other characters like Hurley make comments on how he is a 'Ninja' because of his origin.

Glenn Rhee from The Walking Dead
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
This characters main stereotype is mainly that they are dangerous.

How and why in this case?
He is seen as dangerous because of his ability of killing 'Walkers' and also killing some humans.

White

John Locke from Lost
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
The only stereotype of this character is that he is dangerous.

How and why in this case?
This is because of the way he expresses hatred towards the 'others' because he kills them and other people.

Sid Jenkins from Skins
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
This Character isn't really stereotyped the only one he conforms to is being humorous.

How and why in this case?
He is stereotyped as humorous because he is a low life who doesn't haven self confidence and is seen as a bit weird. He also have low grades and is a stoner so he is shown as being humorous because he is a low life and doesn't get himself in the best of situations.

Rick Grimes from the walking dead
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
This character is stereotyped by being dangerous and pitied.

How and why in this case?
He is seen as dangerous because he has killed multiple people to keep his family safe and his group but he also has great skill in killing walkers.

Black

Dushane from Top Boy
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
This character is stereotyped as being dangerous.

How and why in this case?
He is stereotyped as being dangerous because of his job of being a drug dealer, also that he has killed multiple people to get to the position where he is of controlling Summerhouse.

Michael Dawson from Lost
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
Yes he is stereotyped as being dangerous and pitied.

How and why in this case?
He is stereotyped as these things because his son gets kidnaped and he suffers with depression and lots of the people on the island feel sorry for him, this then causes him to start going mad and going out and killing people his suspects who have taken his son and taking people hostage.

DCI John Luther
Are the representations stereotypes or not?
Yes he is stereotyped as being dangerous and pitied.

How and why in this case?
He is seen as dangerous because of his deteriorating mental health and can often be seen as a crooked cop doing things on the wrong side of the law which he thinks are okay.
