Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of ethnicity

Hotel Babylon

The first interior shot miss-en-scene is used to show a white male in a brash suit being spoken to by two police officers, semic code is used for the audience to believe that he is the boss of the hotel due to his nice suit and his sense of being in charge of this situation of the police entering the building. Furthermore this white man in the suit presumably being high up in his workplace follows the stereotype of white males having good jobs and being well off.

The next main scene shows some hotel staff running around to get the illegal workers hidden, intense and fast music is played in the background this makes it seem more urgent and increasing tension as they are trying to alarm all the people to hide. The editing is also used well to show the increase in urgency with a shorter cutting rhythm, this increases the tension by making it more fast paced and energetic. The increase in tension can highlight the common stereotype of their being conflict between races with the tension rising as white boarder force officers are coming to to take the predominantly non-white illegal workforce away so there is instantly a conflict between the races. The shorter cutting rhythm also shows the urgency of the situation for them running to be hidden in a small room.

Whilst in the small room action code is used to show a woman fainting due to her diabetes, instantly a black male helps her out by curing what has happened to her. This is a countertype as it goes against the stereotype of black males as he is helping the woman out so is a countertype of black males who are usually portrayed as being thuggish and not caring about anyone but themselves.

When the ball male cleaner is apprehended a mid-shot is used, this is used to clearly show who is the bad person and that they have captured him. The fact that it shows a black male being arrested is a massive stereotype as it is very common that black males are often depicted as being criminals as the fact this man is follows closely to this stereotype. Also because the man is arrested the audience feel sorry for him and feel pitiful which is a common stereotype that black people are pitied an in this case it being by the audience.

Overall ethnicity stereotypes are used greatly this situation mainly to highlight the storyline that the police are coming to arrest people. But countertypes are also used which shows one of the characters in a better light.

Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of age

Waterloo road clip

It is possible to argue that this extract can construct a representation of age through camera work, miss-en-scene, sound and editing.

Firstly, in the first scene it uses a combination of establishing shot and panning shot, this clearly shows the three characters that will mainly be involved in this scene being two school boys and a male teacher. It also establishes the miss-en-scene that it is in a school hall with it showing the clear distinction between teachers and pupils through the dress as the teachers are wearing smart business wear and pupils a school uniform. By the teachers wearing this smart business clothes it follows the stereotype of them being work orientated and strong willed whilst telling the boys off for the camera where as the boys stood in uniform that isn't correctly on with lose ties closely follows the stereotype of teenagers not being bothered about school also how they are acting very arrogantly to the teacher.  The extract uses over the shoulder shots so the audience can follow the conversation between the teacher/s and pupils. Furthermore as the second teacher arrives to find out the camera is broken the cutting rhythm is shortened to highlight the increase in tensions going from a normal conversation to more hostile this portrays the stereotype of there being conflict between different age groups in this situation it being between adults and teenagers.

The next scene is interior and includes a two shot of a boy and girl clearly walking down a school corridor as the mise-en-scene is depicting the students in school uniform and it being very busy also students with school bags and books, it uses a combination of a two shot and an establishing shot to do this to show the location where they are. Shortly following this a second girl joins before attacking a boy, intense, loud music is used to show the increasing tension and make the audience feel like what is about to happen is bad. This follows the stereotype that teens are boisterous and out of control due to her fighting/attack in school which would obviously be against the rules.

The scene after this is set in a classroom as it has a desk at the front with a teacher with a projector and students sat looking at the teacher. Obviously the teacher is an adult and follows the stereotype of adults having more power over young people shown by how they follow his instructions. Again the loud intense music is introduced to increase the tension and creates a sound bridge to the next scene in which the girl has cornered the boy she attacked in a room.

In this interior scene involving the boy and girl the cutting rhythm is shortened which highlights the animosity during the fracas the increased cutting rate also follows the stereotype that teenagers are selfish as she is acting and attacking this boy because she wants to and not really any other reason. The increase in the cutting rate also incorporates over the shoulder shot to show the argument and the reactions from what the other person just said this is a countertype as it it showing the teenagers care or are bothered about what the other person is saying whereas they are usually portrayed as being selfish or 'not old enough' for emotions.

In the next scene when the older teacher is apparently dressing like a teenager a high angle shot is used when looking at the girls who are mocking him and a low angle shot when looking at him. This shows that he has more power as he is seen above them because of his occupation but also because he is an adult so he has sort of automatic power over younger people with in this case it being teenagers/students.

Overall, stereotypes are followed in this extract of Waterloo road with the mise-en-scene, editing, sound and camera shots.

European Economic Area (EEA)

The European Economic Area (EEA) provides for the free movement of persons, goods, services and capital within the internal market of the European Union (EU) between its 28 member states, as well as three of the four member states of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA): Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The Agreement is applied provisionally with respect to Croatia—the remaining and most recent EU member state—pending ratification of its accession by all EEA parties.

The EEA was established on 1 January 1994 upon entry into force of an agreement between the member states and the EU's predecessors, the European Economic Community and the European Coal and Steel Community. EFTA states which join the EEA participate in the EU's internal market without being EU members, adopting almost all the relevant EU legislation other than laws regarding agriculture and fisheries. The EEA's "decision-shaping" processes enable them to influence and contribute to new EEA policy and legislation from an early stage.

One EFTA member, Switzerland, has not joined the EEA, but has a series of bilateral agreements with the EU which allow it also to participate in the internal market.

Other ways to be British
The ‘old’ rules for being British required a film to meet three of the following six criteria-
  • A British director
  • A British Producer
  • A predominately British cast
  • A subject matter that informs of the British experience
  • British identity defined by the BFI in ‘sight and sound’
  • (Co productions with British input count as British films)

British films attract audiences through differentiating from Hollywood blockbusters. British films are popular to British audiences as they are more relatable and create a familiar atmosphere; other audiences such as in the USA and China also enjoy British films. Many different countries enjoy British films as some advertise and tell stories about our heritage. They also enjoy British films because of British actors, which includes the clothing and accents. Many popular British films include James Bond, Harry Potter etc. British films differ from Hollywood blockbusters as they attempt to explore differ issues.

Representation of ethnicity

South Asian

Dinesh from Silicon valley.
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
I believe he is slightly stereotype as the actor lays on an Pakistani accent to go with the character. He is also stereo typed because he is seen as funny.

How and why in this case?
His Pakistani accent is used to say things in an off way and cause the audience to laugh. He also follows the stereotype of exotic as the other characters are white americans and they make remarks on his upbringing in Pakistan and how it is different to theirs or odd.

Sayid Jarrah from Lost
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
He is stereotyped as he is seen as dangerous because he was in the Gulf war as an Iraqi soldier so this also makes him exotic to the other characters.

How and why in this case?
He is seen as dangerous because the characters are mainly American and he was on opposing sides to the Americans in the Gulf war so he is instantly distrusted. He is seen as exotic because he is from a different country and has an accent so this makes him different.

Anwar Kharral from skins
Are the representations stereotypical?
Not really as he is presented as a normal character but he is sometimes seen as exotic.

How and why in this case?
He is seen as exotic because of his religion and upbringing in Pakistan which is very different to the rest of the cast.

East Asian

Jin and Sun Kwon from Lost

Are the representations stereotypical or not?
Yes they are stereotypical, this is because they follow the stereotypes of being exotic, dangerous and pitied.

How and why in this case?
They are exotic because they are from Korea which is  completely different to the rest of the characters who mainly come from America so they immediately stand out as being exotic or different to the rest of the characters. They are also deemed to be dangerous mainly Jin because of his constant show of manliness with his former job being an enforcer for a gangster but the other characters like Hurley make comments on how he is a 'Ninja' because of his origin.

Glenn Rhee from The Walking Dead
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
This characters main stereotype is mainly that they are dangerous.

How and why in this case?
He is seen as dangerous because of his ability of killing 'Walkers' and also killing some humans.

White

John Locke from Lost
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
The only stereotype of this character is that he is dangerous.

How and why in this case?
This is because of the way he expresses hatred towards the 'others' because he kills them and other people.

Sid Jenkins from Skins
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
This Character isn't really stereotyped the only one he conforms to is being humorous.

How and why in this case?
He is stereotyped as humorous because he is a low life who doesn't haven self confidence and is seen as a bit weird. He also have low grades and is a stoner so he is shown as being humorous because he is a low life and doesn't get himself in the best of situations.

Rick Grimes from the walking dead
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
This character is stereotyped by being dangerous and pitied.

How and why in this case?
He is seen as dangerous because he has killed multiple people to keep his family safe and his group but he also has great skill in killing walkers.

Black

Dushane from Top Boy
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
This character is stereotyped as being dangerous.

How and why in this case?
He is stereotyped as being dangerous because of his job of being a drug dealer, also that he has killed multiple people to get to the position where he is of controlling Summerhouse.

Michael Dawson from Lost
Are the representations stereotypical or not?
Yes he is stereotyped as being dangerous and pitied.

How and why in this case?
He is stereotyped as these things because his son gets kidnaped and he suffers with depression and lots of the people on the island feel sorry for him, this then causes him to start going mad and going out and killing people his suspects who have taken his son and taking people hostage.

DCI John Luther
Are the representations stereotypes or not?
Yes he is stereotyped as being dangerous and pitied.

How and why in this case?
He is seen as dangerous because of his deteriorating mental health and can often be seen as a crooked cop doing things on the wrong side of the law which he thinks are okay. This is also why he is pitied by people like his girlfriend who feels sorry for him because he has a constant sense of being uneasy.

Representation of gender question

Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of gender

This is a extract from Luther including the main character Luther and Alice.

Mise-en-scene
The clip does mainly stick to the basic stereo types of the male and female, however some of these stereotypes are challenged especially with the female. Firstly in her apartment, she has a large stack of books and a telescope this contradicts the idea that women aren't usually that intelligent. This is Supported even more from the scientific poster that she has on her wall fully proving that she is intelligent. Also that her apartment is in London which will be an expensive area to live in so this further goes against the female stereo type that she will not have much money to be able to afford such a place. In her apartment she also has a red chair, because of how she is acting this may symbolise danger. However she is wearing red lipstick which can symbolise lust which may be why she is pining for Luther's attention. Throughout out the clip the lighting is mostly shown as natural light because at the start of the clip they are shown out side and then the apartment is very much a well light room, however when they are outside the lighting is very dull possibly giving ideas that the show may be much more darker and have a bad turn. Also when the two are talking even though Alice has a lighter background the lighting on her face is darker showing her as weaker or a bad person, where as the lighting around Luther is lighter showing him as a better person compared to her almost as a godly figure that the light is shining onto him. So this challenges the typical stereotype of women that women are loving and caring and that the men are the darker person but this is completely flipped. They are both dressed smartly as Luther is in a tie tweed jacket shirt and trousers and Alice wearing black trousers, smart jacket and top. So this shows that both of them are intelligent for there work places or high up in there work places, however Luther's clothing is much more dull compared to Alice's going with the stereotype that women have better dress sense than men and like the keep up with styles and care more about what they dress where as males just slap on any clothes that work.

Camera shots
At the beginning of the clip it starts with an establishing shot showing both of the characters Luther and Alice. Also this gives context as to where they are a main city of some sort. Then during the conversation between the two characters it uses over the shoulder shots so the audience can follow the conversation, however at the start of the conversation it has a close up of Luther to show his expression to Alice's previous statement but also to start off the conversation. Also throughout the conversation, when it is looking at Alice from Luther's perspective it is looking down as if he is a more threatening person or bigger. Also when it is going from Alice's perspective it is looking up to give connotations that she is a weaker counter part or is threatened by him. In the extract when the female starts to talk about the black hole and how it devourers and destroys matter the camera starts to zoom in on her to make her seem like a threatening or a scary person. Then throughout the clip it goes from doing over the shoulder shots and then going for a long shot but this will also act as a two shot but when it isn't doing a long shot or over the shoulder shot it will use a two shot. So mainly throughout the extract it shows Luther standing above Alice as if he is more dominant and powerful and her as being weak shown by the camera shots looking down on her. This sticks to the general stereotype of the male being much stronger and powerful compared to the man but is challenged by the extract by her being shown as more powerful in certain situations like when talking about the black hole.

Sound
The sound is also key to this extract, at the start when it first shows Alice it has a loud boom type sound to show alice as a sark character straight away and what effect she may have that she is a protagonist in this situation from showing her as a more powerful person with this sinister style sound. Luther and Alice are in a city setting the sound is used to put them in this setting by sounds of cars and traffic in the background so we as the audience can get a full sense of the setting and surrounding. The next part of the extract in which we get sound is from when Alice is talking about the black hole, it uses diegetic sound to try and make the blackhole seem even more ominous and scary. Further more its adding to the effect that Alice is an evil character.  When the clip starts to become more tense and confrontational the sound level of the diegetic sound starts to rise to show the tension rising between the two characters.  This extract is very much conversation based with Luther's loud booming voice which very much dominates the extract and is more dominant over Alice's voice which is calm and soothing but also sexual that she is putting on this voice to try and lure Luther in. Alice's voice also shows a hint of intelligence which is a constant theme throughout the extract, whereas Luther clearly has a North London accent which isn't commonly associated with intelligence. So overall in the clip the man is again shown as more dominant through his loud voice and the theme of Alice being evil and sinister is carried through with her voice and the way she is spoken in a way in that she is trying to lure Luther in.

Editing
At the start of the extract a cross cut is used to keep the storyline moving, by moving from outside to inside her apartment. Also throughout out the clip it uses continuity editing to make the storyline keep flowing and make it so there isn't anything that will cause the viewer to disbelieve anything because something has randomly changed between the cuts. It could also be said that fast-paced editing to show the conversation between the two characters because this will show both of the characters during to conversation so it can show the story progressing.

The chair in the corner of Alice's apartment is a symbolic code and this gives the stereotype of a woman with lust that she wants sexual action and this is a stereo type of certain women and it is applied to Alice. That she has lust for Luther the male character with her so this is chair is symbolising her lust for Luther that she wants to be with him. Also that she mentions sex by asking him whether he came for sex it is showing her as a 'Slag' stereo type that she is wanting male attention and this time from Luther.

Mise-En-Scene of Mad Men

Setting/ location

Due to the desks and way people are dressed, also how the woman in blue is talking about time cards I think that this is an office or business setting also due to the size of it I believe it may be a large business.

Colours

The ginger woman is dressed in blue and this may give sense that she has a dark personality and isn't a very nice lady, backed up by her actions towards the other women. Also Scarlet has bright red lipstick on, this connotes a sexual nature of this woman she is also dressed in red so the director may be trying to give of this woman sexual behaviour through her dress.

Props/ objects

The fact that Scarlet is using a telephone and a type writer also that the woman in blue is holding 'punch cards' to know what hours people have worked shows that they're in a workplace setting. Also that they have punch cards they can't fully keep track of everybody's hours so it may be a large company.

Hairstyle

Both of the women have the same hairstyle of the hair being up, so this may be a company standard showing that they may be of the same level in the hierarchy as they all have to have the same hairstyle whereas people higher up may get to have different more relaxed hairstyles.

Costume (clothes)

Both of the women are dressed in very tight dresses most likely to flaunt their sexuality and also they are both wearing red lipstick which connotes sexual nature about them so the lip stick and tight dresses may both add to how the women act and flaunt who they are. Also both women are wearing earrings but only the woman in blue is wearing a necklace and her earrings look like they have more design wheres as the other woman are plain and boring so this may mean that the woman in blue with the more exciting nicer earrings may be in a higher position in the workplace to her.

Make-up

Both the woman have similar make up that they have red makeup which displaces on their cheeks and also red lipstick again flaunting their sexuality also they are both wearing eye liner to draw attention to their eyes and make them overall look more attractive and feel more attractive to males or just to wear it for themselves.

Posture/ gesture

Both the woman are stood straight upright so they remain to have good posture throughout the clip.

Position in frame

Throughout the clip the women who are the main characters in this situation are always in the middle of the frame through out the clip, apart from at the end when the woman in blue is talking to the woman in green they are both stood at the edge of the frame to show their conversation. However the camera mainly focuses on the woman in blue highlighting her importance compared to the other woman.

Choice of actor

I think that the choice of actor for the woman in blue was good as she can clearly go into a snappy or angry tone to the other woman to show that she is angry with her, also that in the clip it shows it being in at least the 1960s so the way she is asserting herself to a powerful role shows that she is trying to become equal to males and doesn't need to be told what she needs to do.

Lighting

The light throughout the clip is trying to make it look natural as if coming through a window and this helps the clip as it is trying to simulate reality. Also that it shows the windows in the clip to try and make out that the light is coming through the windows.

Mise-en-scene

In the above photo it gives connotations of the men possibly being homeless or possibly stranded somewhere. Also because they have greasy hair this further supports the idea that they are possibly stranded somewhere because they aren't able to get a shower, also that they are wearing dirty clothes so they don't have access to fresh clean clothes. In the background behind the men it shows some people in old clothing and overgrown landscape slightly so this shows that they may be somewhere that isn't particularly advanced or colonised as they don't have nice clothes or new clothes. Also the men look like they may be in a tense situation or waiting around for something because they are sat on what looks like a wall rather than actual chair, also the character on the right is leaning forward as if he is poised for something.

However it doesn't seem like they are fully remote or been their for a long time as the man on the right is still large because if they were somewhere remote and there for a long time like it looks they must have been then he wouldn't be so large. Also this can be backed up because they are still dressed in jeans and t-shirts where as the people behind them are dress in old dirty clothes so they could be somewhere remote but not completely cut off as that clothing in the back doesn't look homemade.

In this situation I think that the person on the left is the leader, this is because the person on the right is looking to them as in there in desperation and they know the answer, also that they look as if they have taken the power in this situation and he looks more dominant and their confused face looks as if he is working out what to do.

Male gaze

22 seconds into the video we see Britney Spears in a very sexual dress sense in a small school uniform. She breaks the forth wall by constantly looking at the camera. With a mid angle shot.

Her dress style gives the idea of a stripper almost because of the small revealing clothing. This beginning part of the video shows that the male gaze from behind the camera as she is fully objectified. Also throughout the video it constantly uses long shot to show the full body of her to basically show her body off in a way. Again one minute in she starts looking down the camera breaking the forth wall in a sultry type look so this is suggesting a sexual nature to the video by her looking.

One minute twenty five seconds into the video she is suddenly outside, she is dressed in a different way but dancing in a way she is dancing with boys still gives off connotations of sex also she is still dancing in a provocative way. In this section it constantly uses the long shot to show her dancing and her full body. Also it still uses the looking down the camera shots to break the forth wall and again gives a sultry look. Also throughout the video they use a hazing camera effect and this gives the
idea that she may be a god or better than normal people.

In the photo above it shows a high angle and gives off that she may be submissive and giving the sultry look, this is used throughout the video. Again this connotes a need for male attention or a need for a male to help her. This is because the way she is basically giving puppy dog eyes for the attention. I think that this music video was made for males, however the song is about her getting over a relationship so the way she is dancing to try and attract males may be more towards the song lyrics, but also males gaze from behind the camera.

I think that this music video is degrading, this is because she is constantly dressed in small tight clothing as if purposely trying to attract male attention. Also that she looks down the camera as if she is pleading for this attention. Furthermore I think that this video is even more degrading because at the time of it being made Britney Spears was only 17, so with the added connotations of sex and want for attention makes it more degrading.

UK tribes

UK Tribes

One of the tribes that I think I am apart of is the 'Get paid crew' this is because I am driven to do well and earn good money when I'm older. I also think I am apart of this tribe because I have already planned what I want to do when I'm older and how I am going to get into that job and I want to do as well as i can during that job and whilst at school.

I also think that I am a trackie, this is because I like to sit back, chill and watch a lot of movies. I do this when I have free time but I try to create as much free time as possible to I can fully be a 'trackie'. I also think I am apart of this because I want to achieve that why I have said I'm part of the 'Get paid crew' but sometimes people in my family don't think I have the full motivation.

So overall I can class myself in the 'urban' tribe. This is because in the description for urban it says that "Urbans are best known for music – from r’n’b, grime, UK bass and funky to old school jungle and rap." This is further true and describes me in some ways that I do like some funky music like Kool and the gang and i also like Rap like Warren G. So I think that I can fully class myself in the overall 'urban' tribe because of the way it describes all the aspects that make you part of that tribe but also part of the smaller tribes like Get paid crew and Trackies.

Who I model myself after

I think that I style myself like Damon Albarn the lead singer of blur, this is because of the way he dresses, he wears Levi’s and Adidas Gazelles also he wears just a normal t-shirt. I wear Levi’s and Gazelles, i wear this because I just like the style that it is a casual way of dressing but it doesn't look scruffy unless the shoes are a mess. But I wear t-shirts that are made by companies that associate them selves with the skateboarding culture. I like the skateboard culture because they never seem to care about much and like they are laid back. I consider myself laid back that I don't worry too much about things and that everything will be okay, so in a way the way I dress can portray this even if it is only through a t-shirt.

I also model my self on Liam Gallagher slightly this is because I wear clothes from his clothing company Pretty Green. I wear his clothing because I think that it looks very smart clothing, even if it is just a t-shirt with the logo on it still looks very nice and smart. Also that it can be worn when you are trying to look smart but also when you are just dressed normally. I also like this clothing because it is a modern spin on the mod that a lot of the clothing sold by pretty green are many remodels of old mod designs or styling, an example of this is the fishtail parka that pretty green have taken it and made it so it looks less like a military jacket and more formal and smart looking so it fits in more with the suit style.

I think that I don't consciously copy or imitate these Celebrities or cultures apart from skate boarding clothing. I wear the skateboard clothing because I like the style of it this is because it looks nice also that it is designed to be comfortable and casual clothing and I like that aspect of it that you can wear it and feel good about yourself. I think that I don't consciously copy celebrities I just dress in a certain way or act a certain way which then may come off as looking or being like celebrities. Also it may be Liam Gallagher's company but he doesn't design the clothing so in effect I'm not copying Liam Gallagher just designs that he likes.
